I'm Not Throwing Away My Shot!
Even though I have not been able to afford a ticket to see the famed Lin Manuel-Miranda masterpiece "Hamilton," I am still capable of supporting the Musical Theatre troops and dreaming that one day I will befriend Lin, become rich enough to afford a ticket, or do the impossible "win the lottery." If you win the lottery that means that you are able to buy a front row seat for $10. How amazing would that be?
For now the best I can do is take cheesy pictures doing the "Hamilton" commemorative pose. This picture was indeed taken by my friend Ron who was obviously impressed and slightly terrified by my conviction and ability to whip out such a unique pose in such a short time span.
Well for me life in New York is all about experiencing as much art as possible. Not that many people can relate to this factor and are willing to drop everything a go to an Off-Broadway show, so many times (actually more often than not), going to the theatre is a solo activity. As I have explained in various other blog posts, I am a part of this club where I am able to seek out shows for a discounted rate. LOVER was a one woman show that I saw the night after going to the "Met" with Erica and Ron. LOVER was definitely not up my alley. I would like to commend the actress for her bravery in telling her "true" story, but the poster was definitely deceptive. To me this show looked like it was going to include comical love stories told by a fun-loving late thirty-year old or early forty-year old woman. I hate to seem negative but this photo was clearly airbrushed, because this woman was much older than she appeared in the advertisement. The play did manage to do its job and suspend my sense of disbelief, because at the time I needed to be transported out of my life, but I wasn't a huge fan of this work. I do love this playhouse. It's on 42nd street and 9th avenue and contains about ten theatres. They have the most amazing bathroom that probably has about 30 stalls and is so pristine it takes me back to my Tokyo days. Also they have the most amazing café/bar/waiting area. One time I was like two hours early for a show and the greeter was like "No problem, just go to our waiting area." Knowing that being young and having the artistic look that I have no money, I found that I was not pressured to even purchase a water. So, no matter what is playing at this location, I find that I am always anxious to go back to my beloved theatre space.
