The Mother/Daughter Edition continues...
After going to see "the Prom" my mom was reminded of the absolute joy that I receive from the experience of seeing a show, so she decided the next day that we would go ahead and see another show. I was thrilled by this news and just knew that tonight was the night to see "Beetlejuice."
So when I heard that this show was Broadway bound I thought that I should prepare for this show's coming to Broadway by watching the film for a little information and backstory. Yea, definitely not a good plan. The movie is absolutely insane and is impossible to enjoy or justify to anybody as being worthy of a Broadway production. But the truth was that I had this excellent outfit to wear, that was so Beetlejuiced themed that I knew an opportunity to hit this theme spot-on could only come once in a lifetime.
Play Review
As a whole I thoroughly enjoyed the Broadway production of "Beetlejuice." I thought the lead character played by Alex Brightman was absolutely outstanding. I count myself as being an incredibly energetic individual, however I feel as if I piddle in comparison to this gentleman. Throughout most of the show he was required to be on stage and during every instance he had to be fully committed to this over-the-top persona. On the subway ride home I remarked to my mom how absolutely astounding this actor is and then added that I bet he crashes at the end of each day. I went into this show knowing that two of my favorite actors would be in this production: Kerry Butler (The actress who was Kira in the Broadway musical version of Xanadu, which is one of my favorite productions of all time. I actually met up with her on the street and we ended up taking a selfie. She is amazingly talented and is an equally amazing person.) Rob McClure was also in this production as the other half of the boring couple. I saw him perform in the musical "Chaplin" which next to Xanadu is one of my all-time favorites. His performance was heart-wrenching and absolutely beautiful. Even though both him and Kerry played a convincing couple a part of me was saddened to think that this part was so unsubstantial and that they are capable of so much more.
The show never deviated from the zany flavor that it aimed to create. There were loads of special effects, innovative lighting tricks, and fun and laughter for all. I would highly recommend this show for anyone looking for an entertaining night out. It was just plain enjoyable and did not provoke a lot of thought
As I went to pull this top out of my closet I noticed that something fell off of it; it was a BEETLE! What does that mean?
It may appear that when my mom is here my life is purely devoted to seeing Broadway shows. Well, think of my blog as a highlight reel that only illustrates the cool/photo worthy events in my life. During the day when my mom was here we took care of quite a bit of business. She managed to clarify a lot of information concerning my healthcare and let me just add that she is a master cleaner/organizer and she helped make my room from a liveable place to go to a masterfilled filled haven that was equipped with loads of space saving elements.
The Desk
I knew that I absolutely needed a desk. Being a writer and all, kind of ensures that a desk is an essential element of existence. Since I am living a life where it is basically imperative to live like a pauper and seek out the cheapest possible solutions, I figured that I would get one of those banquet tables from Costco and call it good. Well my mom came up with an even cheaper option. So one day when we were walking in my neighborhood we came across an old desk that someone had thrown to the curb. Initially I was kind of weirded out by pulling this item out of the trash, but then my mom told me that by retrieving this desk from the trash would ensure that I was one step closer to becoming a true New Yorker. That did it, and with that slight dig I found myself helping her whisk this item out of the trash and into my apartment.
I must say it was missing its original glass covering, but my aunt gave us some chalk boards to provide an even surface to the top of this desk. It really is kind of perfect, and I suspect it will become kind of an heirloom that I transport to all of my different apartments.
It's amazing how my mom was able to help me transform a small room into a place that could contain everything to make me self sufficient.
